Ten cartoon strip authors/scenarists from Belgium and abroad have been given the opportunity to devise a graphic story on contemporary Brussels. They were selected as the winners of the international Brussels in Shorts competition. Het beschrijf is facilitating the creation of their 10 short stories by providing financial support and accommodation in the city centre. The stories all refer to one common location (the Oude Graanmarkt), but differ both graphically and in their content, while all offering an interesting slant on contemporary Brussels. The authors will be staying in Brussels in spring 2012.

About the project

In summer 2011 Het beschrijf put out a call to Belgian and foreign cartoon strip authors/scenarists to take part in the international story-writing contest Brussels in Shorts. In this way Het beschrijf is contributing to the literary significance of Brussels through the medium of the graphic novel.

The 10 winners were announced on 10 December 2011 during Strip Turnhout. The jury, comprising Ever Meulen (chairman), Willem de Graeve (Belgisch Centrum voor Beeldverhaal), Charles Dierick (comic strip expert, ex-Moulinsart), Johan Stuyck (Oogachtend publishers), Linda Torfs (Mekanik) and Annelies Verbeke (writer), selected the most expressive 10 stories from 43 entries.

The creative process can be followed on this website and in an exhibition at Passa Porta. Oogachtend will publish the winning stories in an album, the Belgisch Centrum voor Beeldverhaal will exhibit them and they will be included in the next Passa Porta Festival.

The international ‘Brussels in Shorts' competition is a new initiative by the literary organisation Het beschrijf, and was commissioned by the Secretary of State Bruno De Lille, a member of the VGC board responsible for Culture, Youth, Sport and the Civil Service.
