residencies

Every year Het beschrijf invites numerous foreign writers and translators to come and work on a new manuscript in quiet surroundings and to become fully acquainted with our culture and literature. Our guests stay either in the green calm of Vollezele (in Villa Hellebosch) or in the heart of Brussels (Passa Porta). Some residents take part in literary evenings attended by the public and working sessions with translators or fellow writers. Authors may themselves also submit an application for a residency.

As a result of all these exchanges, Het beschrijf has built up a network of international partners, which means that authors in Flanders are also regularly able to enjoy a period of work abroad.

The ‘Residences in Flanders' project receives the support of the Flemish authorities.

    • The French Canadian writer Myriam Beaudoin sent us her new novel 33, chemin de la Baleine (Editions Leméac).  Her residency with us in winter 2008 was spent writing a great part of it. Or put in her own words: "The last hundred pages have been written in Vollezele. These pages are the most beautiful and truest in the book."
