The Terrible Privacy of Maxwell Sim was recently published, a road novel about the sad fate of the protagonist, Maxwell Sim, and a brilliant picaresque novel for the twenty-first century. In May 2009 Jonathan Coe detached himself from civilization to complete this novel during a residential stay at Het beschrijf in Villa Hellebosch (Vollezele).

This autumn Jonathan Coe comes to Brussels, Ghent and Leuven, to discuss his recent work, in which he closely examines new forms of isolation.

Lecture and discussion with Annelies Beck in Passa Porta.

About the novel

Maxwell Sim cannot take it any longer. He is estranged from his father, has a traumatic divorce behind him, and is unable to communicate with his adolescent daughter. And despite his seventy-four friends on Facebook, he has no one to share his problems with. Then someone makes him an unusual business proposal, for which he must travel by car from London to the Shetland Islands. Sim began the trip with an open mind, good intentions and a reassuring voice on the navigation system. But soon the trip took an unexpected, grim twist, that not only brought him to the most remote point in the United Kingdom, but also into the deepest and darkest moments of his life.

    • The French Canadian writer Myriam Beaudoin sent us her new novel 33, chemin de la Baleine (Editions Leméac).  Her residency with us in winter 2008 was spent writing a great part of it. Or put in her own words: "The last hundred pages have been written in Vollezele. These pages are the most beautiful and truest in the book."
