Geert van Istendael in conversation with Austrian author Robert Menasse, about his work and about Europe, ideology, fact and fiction.

The Austrian Robert Menasse (1954) studied Germanic Philology, Philosophy and Political Science in Vienna, Salzburg and Messina. He worked at the University of São Paulo in Brazil for six years. He also gave lectures on the philosophical and aesthetic theories of Hegel, Lucács, Benjamin and Adorno. After his return from Brazil in 1988 he worked as a translator from Portuguese, an author of essays in cultural criticism and a man of letters. He has won a great many prizes, scholarships and honours. In 1989 he won the literature prize of the city of Vienna and in 2002 the Friedrich Hölderlin Literature Prize in the city of Homburg. In 2006 he was made a Knight of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

    • The French Canadian writer Myriam Beaudoin sent us her new novel 33, chemin de la Baleine (Editions Leméac).  Her residency with us in winter 2008 was spent writing a great part of it. Or put in her own words: "The last hundred pages have been written in Vollezele. These pages are the most beautiful and truest in the book."
